Basic Details Concerning A Tanning Booth

By Haywood Raptis

The device that is employed for cosmetic tans is known as a tanning booth. This machine operates through emission of ultraviolet radiation. The tanning bed and tanning booth are similar machines, but the booth is made so that users stand during the session and do not lie down.

The standard tanning booth utilizes 180 watt or 160 watt, as well as lamps that may be VHO-R or VHO. These are similar to the sun in the Mediterranean during the middle of the day. A cheaper tanning booth may include a system that uses lamps that are high-output and 100 watt, or even reflector UVA lamps, also called RUVA. On average, the tanning booth includes between 32 and 56 lamp units and requires up to 15 minutes per session.

Although similar to a tan bed, tanning booths are distinct in their vertical design. There are some other general differences amongst the devices. In most cases, a tanning booth uses a high watt lamp, but there are some exceptions. Booths are believed to achieve a better tan because they allow for easier movement during the process. Many include handles up top, making it easier to tan underneath arms and sides.

The absence of pressure points with a booth is a difference between the devices. A person using a bed is supported by acrylic and blood in certain areas may be restricted. Melanin production might then be reduced, leading to a tan that is not completely even. For most people, this difference is not obvious. However, some may notice pressure areas are slightly less tan than the rest of the body. A booth does not usually feature acrylics and uses a wire mesh to protect people from lamps.

Usually, a tanning booth requires the user to spend less time during each session than one would in a bed. This is, in part, due to the types of lamps that are used in these structures. They produce more UVA and UVB. Beds and booths must adhere to many of the same regulations, including the law that recommended exposure time be posted in the user manual and nearby the device itself.

Booths are not as popular as beds. A tanning booth is usually more costly and considered less comfortable. Still, many businesses choose to purchase the tanning booth instead of the bed because the devices take up less space. Their vertical design takes up less area.

Like anything that gives off ultraviolet rays, there are things to be concerned about. A major risk is overexposure. Booths are not safer than beds. This is because the general mechanics of these two devices are the same. Overexposure to radiation of this kind can lead to DNA mutation, lack of immune system response, the advancement of aging, skin cancer and premature wrinkling. Those who frequently use these are three times more likely to develop melanoma, a deadly form of skin cancer.

The tanning booth is a machine that is used to give people artificial tans. This machine is like the bed in its mechanics but is generally more expensive, less comfortable and features a vertical design. Individuals who use beds and booths for tanning have an increased risk of developing skin-related problems, including cancer.
