Don't Forget Regularly Use Sun Tan Lotion

By Haywood Hunter

The sun is always a welcome visitor to the summer skies. It always seems like the first real sunny day brings out the sun worshippers in their droves. Any spare piece of ground is taken up by those trying to get a tan, and many do claim to feel healthier for having obtained a tan. It is hoped that these individuals have applied a sun tan lotion.

A lot of people get sun tan lotions mistaken with sun screens. The good news is that you can purchase combination sun tan lotion and sun screen. The screening effect will help to protect you from the harmful ultra violet rays, whilst the tanning element works in conjunction with the bodies naturally occurring proteins to darken the skin's pigmentation.

Remember when shopping for a combination sun tan lotion, ensure that the letters SPF are present. This is the acronym for Sun Protection Factor. A lot of folk use an SPF of 20 as a good baseline, but if the number is higher the individual will discover they are able to withstand the direct sun's rays a lot longer.

One effect from the sun is that it will dry the skin. This is why your skin feels tight if you have sun burn. The sun tan lotion's cream aspect is designed to be readily absorbed by the skin, so keeping it hydrated. This will also assist in maintaining the skin's natural elasticity.

Anyone who was about in the 1980s might remember the very successful slip, slop, slap campaign. It started in Australia, and was instrumental in raising awareness to the dangers of overdoing sun worshipping. Thirty years down the line and it is still just as important to remind yourself, when out in strong sun slip a loose shirt on, slop on your sun tan lotion, and protect your head by slapping on a hat.

People are a bit more careful when at the beach, but seem to forget that it is the same sun over their backyard. Then there are those who regularly work outside. A shirtless construction worker is a common sight when the sun is shining. Yet he probably isn't attempting to tan, he should still use some form of sun tan lotion or else he will get sun burn. If it is too severe it could force time off of work.

For those actively seeking a sun tan, the use of a combination sun tan lotion and screen means that your body will be protected for longer. This means that the sun gets longer to work with the bodies own melanin. This is the bodies own sun block, which will cause the pigmentation in the skin to darken, or tan.

The sun tan lotion should be re-administered regularly. Some might feel that because they are using a waterproof one, but not entering the water that it doesn't affect them. Unfortunately it does, due to the body naturally perspiring. So reapplication of the sun tan lotion is necessary even when using waterproof varieties.

So if you are looking forward to the sun, there are a few things to remember. Wear a sun tan lotion, and also regularly reapply it. A sun tan looks good, but sun burn doesn't.
