Individual Safety Items And Disaster Items

By Eric Holm

For those leading a faster paced life, personal safety and security is a serious matter to think upon. A threatening situation or a criminal act can victimize you or your family members anywhere and anytime, but risks can be reduced by assuming more responsibility for your own security. Personal safety and security is applicable in almost every aspect of normal life.

There are different forms of personal security including residential security, security while traveling, and security measures for children, surveillance and deterring or repulsing a sexual assault, and others.

One of the most major concerns that people will run into is not knowing about the residential home security that is present. That is when you should know about some of the things that you can do to help improve the security of your home. Some of those things that you can do will be to ensure that your homes doors are locking properly as well as the windows. You should also make sure that you have these fitting into the door properly. Something else that you can do is provide your neighbor with the extra key so you do not have to break into the home. However, window bars can be installed to prevent your home from being broken into. Fire safety is another aspect that could be overlooked in most homes as well. To help with this you should guarantee that you have smoke detectors on each floor to alert to fires. Then to help out you should have a fire extinguisher as well to help you put out any minor fires. You just need to make sure that you check these regularly to guarantee they are in a good working condition. Emergency lights are what will kick on when your home loses electric. Without this, you could easily stumble around in the dark without power and injure yourself even more than what you thought.

There are certain essential emergency supplies that you should keep on hand. These include a fire extinguisher, pepper spray and/or personal defense items, a 3-day supply of food and water, a flashlight, extra batteries for flashlight and radio, bedding, small gas stove, candles, matches, solar radio or shortwave radio, medical or first aid kits, and finally toilet facilities and supplies.

Note that all the above discussed personal safety and security measures are not only applicable at home, but these preventive measures should be followed while you are away from home. In spite of being acquainted with all the above discussed safety measures, you should always be prepared for the unexpected and remain alert during your daily routine and avoiding flirting with danger.
