Tips For Purchasing The Best Sunless Tanning Lotions

By Haywood Hunter

Knowledge is a fundamental possession in many fields and beauty is not an exception. To buy the best self tanning lotions one requires some prior knowledge in beauty products. Advertisements in the market are merely meant to win the confidence of the buyer. The chemical composition of most lotions however remains the same. Some of the ingredients contained in tanning products are the discussion of this article. One can gain some real knowledge in buying tanners by reading it.

Before deciding to buy a product, one should study the list of ingredients printed on the container. The list indicates all substances inside the commodity and their respective percentages. Commonly, the ingredients are moisturizers, sun-screens, tanners, and bronzers. If possible one should research each component to know its effect before buying.

No matter what is said in the advertisements, active compounds in a majority of tanning commodities are erythulose and dihydroxyacetone, abbreviated as (DHA). Both DHA and erythulose are sugars which may be plant derivatives or products of industrial processing. The level of concentration of the 2 compounds in a product determines its ability to tan the skin. Producers provide varying levels of concentration to suit the varying skin types of consumers.

One must pick the concentration of erythulose and DHA depending on skin complexion. Strong concentrations should be for dark-skinned people and mild concentrations for light-skins. Applying high concentrations of DHA on light skins may cause excess tanning which may again be bad. It is advised to seek dermatological advice about skin type and optimum concentrations of DHA and erythulose to use.

Erythulose and dihydroxyacetone both function by chemically reacting with epidermal amino acid in dead cells to create a brown compound. The chemical reaction is called Maillard reaction. The resultant brown complex stays for about four days and fades away. The fading is a result of sloughing off of dead epidermal cells. The tan can only reapplication of the lotion at least twice on a weekly basis.

The procedure followed when applying a product plays a big role in the results achieved. The initial application should be heavy followed by light applications for maintaining the tan. Before applying, one should make sure that the skin is cleaned properly. Products that contain erythulose only cause a slower color change in comparison to those with dihydroxyacetone. Erythulose is therefore a better solution for individuals who desire a gradual body tan. Some products mix the two compounds to achieve a tan that lasts longer.

Additional substances such as perfumes, moisturizers, bronzers, and anti-aging agents are very essential. Moisturizers keep a moisturized skin, accelerating the process of color change. Although bronzers get washed away by water, they darken the skin. Anti-aging additives keep the skin good-looking and young while perfumes emit a nice fragrance. Enzyme tyrosine is said to accelerate color change by stimulating excessive synthesis of melanin.

The desired effect takes some time to be achieved. One should not be prompted to change products when this happens since skin reactions and allergies may occur. It is recommendable to stay with one product for a while. Also, one should beware of costly yet very ineffective commodities sold in the market.
