Looking Your Best With A Professional Manicure And Pedicure

By Lila Bryant

A pampering beauty treatment is one of the best ways to boost your confidence. Think of how a great new haircut can lift your spirits. Unfortunately many treatments are expensive and take time. However, getting a manicure and pedicure is economical, quick and will make you look perfectly groomed and ready for the world.

When you visit a salon to have your nails done, ask for a 'mani-pedi' or a 'mani and pedi'. This is usually one of the cheaper treatments you can choose from at a spa too. Make an appointment and leave about an hour of your day free for this quick pick-me-up.

The nail technician will start by shaping your nails with a nail clipper, scissors and a nail file. She'll also remove any traces of nail polish. Then she'll let you soak your hands and your feet in water. This softens the skin so that she can apply a scrub or file away dead skin and calluses. She'll trim your cuticles and push them back and then add a rich moisturizer so your skin will look smooth and younger.

If you have very short or damaged nails, you may need acrylic nails applied on top of your own. The mani-pedi also includes the application of nail polish. Most salons have a great choice of colors, from soft and natural to bright and sparkly. If you want to polish to last as long as three weeks, ask for gel polish.

If you want your nails to look natural, a French mani-pedi is a good option. Your nails will be painted in a soft pink or peach shade as close as possible to your natural nail color. Then the tips are carefully painted in white. A top coat in a clear polish is added for smoothness and protection.

Many people nowadays prefer a bit of edge to the traditional French mani-pedi. For example, they add fine details like little flowers painted onto the nails or a row of stick-on crystals. Another variation is to use brighter colors. For instance, the technician may use a red base and paint the tips in gold or silver. She may also use glitter instead of the traditional white polish for the tips of your nails.

Sometimes subtlety is the last thing you want, for instance when you find yourself in glitzy Las Vegas NV. For really striking nails, ask a good nail technician to use your nails as little canvases for creative nail art. Anything is possible, from floral designs to themes like American flags for the Fourth of July or 'blood spatter' for Halloween.

For a professional, pampering mani-pedi, you simply need to ask at your local spa or salon. A nail salon is an even better option, especially if you also want good nail art. If you're really strapped for cash, though, invite a friend over, pour some wine and give yourselves a fun treatment in the comfort of your own home.
